CD Projekt Red had a very rough end to 2020. The start to 2021 isn’t shaping up a whole lot better!
After the failed launch of Cyberpunk 2077 you would think things have to get better right? WRONG! This morning CDPR has been hacked and left a ransom note which was stated on Twitter. They have stolen the source codes to Cyberpunk 2077, Witcher 3, Gwent, and an unreleased version of the Witcher3 according to the note. Unless CDPR reaches out to discuss the demands with the unknown hackers they will leak/sold all stolen codes online. It is also claimed that they have documents relating to accounting, administration, legal, HR, investor relations, and more. They state they will release all documents to their “contacts in gaming journalism”.
The ransom also states that they have encrypted several of their key servers but that they are sure that wasn’t an issue as they probably can restore from backups. In the letter to the hackers CDPR stated that “our backups remain intact. We have already secured our IT infrastructure and begun restoring the data”. There is a part in the letter where CDPR attempts to re-assure all of its fans that they do not believe any of the players personal data was compromised in the attack.
CDPR isn’t going to negotiate with the hackers and are well aware that this will lead to the release of the compromised data.
They are taking this breach seriously and have said, “We have already approached the relevant authorities, including law enforcement and the President of the Personal Data Protection Office, as well as IT forensic specialists, and we will closely cooperate with them in order to fully investigate this incident.”
