New world is a MMORPG with a huge world that players can directly affect. It has large scale PvP elements and even PvE players can help in PvP indirectly. It is also made by Amazon Games who made their first title “Crucible” this year. Currently the game is still in beta and thus it is still liable to change. So please take this review with a grain of salt.
New world has a massive map, currently in the beta there are 12 regions, each one controlled by one of the 3 factions. Each faction can take over new land and govern it and as well set tax rates for various things. The “Marauders” are one such faction and currently they own the starting area known as “First light”. Thus they defend it and reap the rewards of that area. But the Syndicate, who is another faction, can attack that area and this will set up a PvP war event. This can have 100 players or more depending on the server and who signs up for the war. These wars dictate who will own the land for the time being and the owners will run it. Which brings me to another important part of the game.
New World’s factions
There are three factions in New World and each have their own goals and reasons for fighting. These factions are The Syndicate, The Marauders, and The Covenant. Joining a faction is a big decision because you can only have one character per server. And that character is locked into that faction permanently, so choose carefully.
The Syndicate is a secretive group who wants to learn the secrets of the island. This is to improve the lives of everyone and wipe the corruption out. They want to help everyone and have awesome Plague Doctor masks. The Marauders are a military group who want to fight and make money. They’re pretty simple to understand and have cool armor. The Covenant is a cult who wants to wipe out corruption and heretics. They look like Monty Python’s Spanish Inquisition.
New World’s Combat
How is the combat in New World? It’s alright, the hits feel satisfying, the skills are cool, and it has a good base. My only complaints are how rigid the movement feels while in combat. The animations are long and very drawn out, this makes dodging enemy players a cinch and makes you easily punishable during attacks. And when you’re hit or hit an enemy, the recipient is staggered for a second.
This makes the combat feel like a constant stream of static animations. This makes combat feel like you’re trudging through water sometimes. This wasn’t very pleasant to me personally and especially with the musket weapon it was very apparent. Reloading took forever when the enemy is beating you over the head because the bullet doesn’t phase them. And with no good escape tools to keep your distance, it was painful.
That being said, New world’s combat wasn’t bad. The combat felt strong and impactful. Your skills and attacks hit hard and firmly and the enemy attacks were well telegraphed. This made the combat have a pretty solid flow and I felt nice to overcome a tough fight.
So what do I think about New World’s beta? It is pretty fun, I have spent a lot of hours in the beta and have enjoyed all of it. Even if the combat doesn’t feel good to me, it is serviceable. And everything else about this game still draws me in.
The game has great armor, the setting is interesting, the enemies are cool, and the characters are entertaining to listen to. This game has a lot to offer to fans of MMO’s. I would recommend this game to those who want to hop onto a new game in this genre, but if you are unsure about MMO’s then wait for full release before trying out the game.
This game is looking promising and I’m excited to see where the developers take it. New world is on sale for $39.99 USD on Steam and it comes with beta access and the full game. The full launch comes in 2021 so be sure to check it out.
