On March 26th 2020 Nintendo teased that Smash Bros Ultimate will be getting an ARMS rep. So on June 22nd we finally have been told who is joining Smash. While this isn’t a character that everyone has been pining for, it is a very nice addition to the roster.
Yesterday in Smash Bros Ultimate’s newest direct, Sakurai gave us the announcement. So the newest character to join Smash is Min Min! And while some are still displeased with the new character being from ARMS, many people are satisfied.
The animation for this video is amazing and is very fun to just watch. It shows off a lot of the ARMS characters fighting for the invitation to Smash Bros Ultimate. And eventually ending with Min Min grabbing the card and beating Twintelle and Kid Cobra. So I can say this is one of the better DLC trailers for a character in Smash Bros Ultimate. It is just so pleasing to watch, has some entertaining moments. And the best part in any Smash DLC trailer, Captain Falcon eating ramen with Kirby.
Min Min Gameplay in Smash Bros Ultimate
But if you thought the trailer is all they revealed, you are mistaken. Because with that, we have Sakurai playing the newest addition. Her playstyle is what you would expect from her. A person with stretchy arms and unique melee weapons. She has insane amounts of range and 3 ARMS to swap between for different attack modes.
She might be the most unique Smash Bros ultimate character in the game! And what makes her unique is how she has two arms that she controls individually. Meaning the A button controls her left arm and the B button controls her right arm. So this allows her to attack in two directions, or two different angles, with some insane zoning.
There’s also a good out of shield escape with the up B, a reflect, and even edge guarding from a safe distance. This doesn’t even mention her Aerial smash attacks. She is a zoner with tons of range and defensive options.
How good will Min Min be?
Well while I can sing her praises about how good she can be, she has her downfalls like any character. But her downfalls are pretty straightforward, fast characters in particular are the biggest threat. Since they can get in and capitalize on her moves easily. But if you cant get in and hit her, prepare to start playing a bullet hell.
She has solid damage output and good range. But make sure you don’t attack carelessly against a fast opponent. Because unless you can move in time, you can be pummeled with little resistance. But luckily for her, her Up B while she is on the ground makes for a great out of shield option. This is due to the invincibility frames on the startup of the move. And in Smash Bros Ultimate that can be helpful for a zoner.
And with her reflect she has a counter to being pelted from afar. With the ability to out range and reflect other zoners, they are not a reliable pick to fight her. And I would even say that it is a losing match-up against her to zone her out. So I recommend when fighting her to choose a faster character. And this can be Sonic, Captain Falcon, Joker, or another character that can get in quick to punish.
So do I believe she is a good character? She isn’t going to dominate the game, but she will have a place. She’ll camp and pelt you from a distance, covering ledge and even roll options from a safe distance. So when she has a good match-up, she will dominate. But if she loses a match-up, she will have to fight for every inch to stand a chance.
